# Shopify lets AI agents in the browser complete checkout

Shopify said AI agents working inside a shopper's web browser can now finish a purchase on stores run by its merchants. Until now they could only find products and fill a cart. Gil Greenberg, a staff product manager for agentic commerce at Shopify, wrote on X that the feature is rolling out to every eligible merchant.

The change extends Shopify's support for [WebMCP](https://shopify.dev/docs/api/web-mcp?ref=metatalks.ai) from storefronts and carts to checkout. WebMCP is a proposed standard for agents that run inside the shopper's own browser. Three new tools let an agent read the checkout, change details such as the delivery address or shipping method and place the order, without having to scrape the page. The buyer sees the same checkout, handles steps such as logging in to Shop Pay and confirms the order before the agent places it.

Agents also have to identify themselves by signing their requests. Without that, Shopify warns, its bot detection may deprioritize or block them. For now, agents can use WebMCP only in Chromium-based browsers.

Shopify already offered a separate route for agents that run on a server rather than in a browser: a hosted Model Context Protocol (MCP) server.

Amazon has gone the other way, blocking AI agents from buying for shoppers on its platform. Adidas has reportedly done the same.
