# iPhone 18 Pro gets Reference Image, Apple's way to show a photo came from a camera, not AI

**A new sensor in the main camera signs the image data as it shoots, and Apple's cloud turns that data into a reference copy the company says cannot be altered.**

Apple's iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, on sale from September 18, come with [Apple Reference Image](https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2026/09/apple-debuts-iphone-18-pro-and-iphone-18-pro-max/?ref=metatalks.ai#:~:text=use%20a%20histogram.-,Introducing%20Apple%20Reference%20Image,-Users%20can%20now), a camera feature the company announced at its September 9 launch event. It gives owners a way to prove a photo came from the phone and to check whether it has been changed since.

Shooting a reference image is opt-in and happens in the camera's new Reference mode. The copy then appears in the Photos app next to the ordinary shot, which can still be edited, so the two can be compared by eye. Third-party apps can show reference images through new APIs in iOS, iPadOS and macOS 27.

Apple likens the reference copy to a digital negative. [Nieman Lab](https://www.niemanlab.org/2026/09/apple-launches-a-new-way-to-prove-a-photo-was-shot-with-an-iphone-not-generated-by-ai/?ref=metatalks.ai) gives an example: a photographer whose news picture is doctored with AI and passed around online could answer with the reference image, which shows what the sensor actually recorded.

Support for Google's SynthID, an invisible watermark for AI imagery, arrives in a software update later this year, and Apple says most edited images will carry it, depending on what was changed.

Nieman Lab notes that Apple has not signed on to [C2PA Content Credentials](https://contentcredentials.org/?ref=metatalks.ai), a metadata-based provenance standard that Nikon and Canon have adopted and Google supports on its Pixel phones.

Apple says Reference Image will not be offered in China at launch because of regulatory requirements. In the EU, the phones cannot capture reference images at launch, though people there can still generate them from signed sensor data and view them.
