# ChatGPT for Healthcare now connects to patient records in Epic

**OpenAI has** [**connected ChatGPT for Healthcare to Epic**](https://openai.com/index/chatgpt-connects-health-records-and-healthcare-sources?ref=metatalks.ai) **— the electronic health record system hospitals use to hold the charts of more than 325 million patients — so clinicians can bring permitted patient information into the assistant and put questions to it.**

Rather than hunting by hand through appointment notes, lab results, medication lists and specialist write-ups, a clinician can ask ChatGPT to fetch that material and condense it — reviewing a history, picking out what has changed, getting ready for an upcoming visit. In some deployments the assistant runs inside the records system itself, so none of that requires leaving the patient chart. One of the pilot sites is UCSF Health, the hospital system of the University of California, San Francisco.

The same release adds a Healthcare Public Data plugin, wired to nine official public sources — among them PubMed, the US government’s index of medical research, and ClinicalTrials.gov, its registry of clinical trials. It is meant for lining up and confirming precise details in one place rather than querying each source separately: who qualifies for a trial, which version of a coverage policy applies, the codes that identify a drug.

OpenAI’s own review covered 27 clinical use cases. Physicians the company works with produced 4,363 assessments and rated 99.1% of the responses safe. The company maintains that AI should not be relied on to diagnose or to treat, and it faces [lawsuits over health advice ChatGPT gave users](https://www.nytimes.com/2026/07/22/well/openai-chatgpt-health-lawsuit.html?ref=metatalks.ai).

A workspace administrator has to switch on the Epic link and the public data plugin, and Enterprise customers clear their eligibility with OpenAI first. Individual clinicians in the US can add the plugin themselves; the Epic link is offered only to organizations.
