Chasing on-device AI, Apple is said to skip the M6 Pro, Max and Ultra entirely to hurry toward an AI-built M7.

Apple is reshaping its Mac processors around artificial intelligence, and it is moving fast enough that the next generation, the M6, is expected to arrive as a single base chip, with no Pro, Max or Ultra versions to follow, leaving one entry-level part to define the entire generation.

That breaks a pattern held since the M1. Across every Apple Silicon generation so far, the company has followed its base chip with more powerful Pro and Max configurations, and it shipped Ultra chips in the M1, M2 and M3 lines. The M6 would be the first to skip those higher tiers entirely.

Apple concluded that the neural-processing gains coming in the following M7 family were large enough to justify racing toward it rather than completing the M6 lineup. On that reasoning, AI is no longer just one more capability a chip has to accommodate; it now shapes both how the processors are designed and when they ship.

The M7 is where the bigger on-device AI upgrades are expected to land, including memory bandwidth reaching as high as 240 gigabytes per second. That would sit above the M6's anticipated 200 GB/s and well clear of the 153 GB/s ceiling on today's M5.

Even so, the base M6 is expected to bring a faster memory architecture, stronger on-device AI, and a redesigned GPU with up to 12 cores.

The chip is anticipated to debut in a new 14-inch MacBook Pro before the end of 2026 — a machine Apple is said to have finished months ago. With no Pro or Max variants to extend it, the M6 generation looks set to run unusually short.

From there the roadmap points to an entry-level M7 across the first half of 2027, with M7 Pro and Max chips toward the close of 2027 and an M7 Ultra in 2028.
